The idea of Zinplex was born in 1985 by its owner and now CEO of the company Mr. Ockert Fourie. Mr. Fourie has been working in the pharmaceutical industry for the past 53 years. Firstly with a number of prominent international pharmaceutical companies and later working his way into becoming a very successful pharmaceutical entrepreneur.

His inspiration and interest in Zinc supplements came about as a result of reading an article by a prominent medical researcher. The article described the wonderful uses and effects of Zinc supplementation. At the time, Mr. Fourie had been suffering from severe bouts of cold sores and was making use of any Zinc supplement he could find. He decided to investigate further and ended up creating his own treatment making use of Zinc.
